MidWeek MidCentury: Retro Patio Furniture at Lowe's

We were at Lowe's last night making a few final purchases for our bathroom renovation that starts in just two weeks (!!!), and the cutest vintage-inspired aluminum chairs, side tables and gliders caught my eye. We've been on the lookout for a real set of this furniture for years, but when you find it around here, which is rare, it's gotten very expensive. So although I'd love an old set, I'm kind of tempted, you know?

The best part was that they have the same set in miniature!!! Three little chairs and a table! Don't you think the twins need it?!

Can I register at Lowe's?!?!

Midweek MidCentury: Mod Dots

The hubby and I are working our way through episodes of the awesome early-'70s show McMillan and Wife (more on that soon), so I'm digging all things from that era even more than usual; hence this post.

I would guess this room is probably from the late '60s--and how awesome is it?! And more importantly--how come no one decorates like this any more? It's so fun and matchy-matchy and wacky!!! I mean, Jonathan Adler espouses wacky, but not like this!

Those chairs look totally uncomfortable, but that's really beside the point because who doesn't want to sit in a polka-dotted chair and play Chinese checkers?!?!

Shoe of the Day + Midweek MidCentury: Going Mod

Clarks Herring Ballet Flat

Stock is getting low on these sweet peach ballet flats from Clarks (another can-you-believe-it? shoe find!) pretty much everywhere, and I must have them for spring!!! (I know you all understand that I'm already thinking about my spring/summer wardrobe when it's not even Christmas yet, right?)

I'm envisioning starting to transition my wardrobe into a much more neutral color palate this spring, buying only a few clean, mod-inspired pieces in black, navy, cream/white, and peach, because I feel like my wardrobe is too fussy and has way too much going on. Do you ever feel that way?

This plan is mainly inspired by this incredible jacket I picked up from Leproust Vintage last month:

It's hanging in my coat closet and taunting me each and every time I go in there. I can wait to wear it with a navy or black a-line sheath and these little flats!

Midweek MidCentury: Pretty Table

I've been pretty open about my love of all things midcentury modern, but what I really don't like is how a lot of people equate MCM with over-the-top kitchiness. There's no denying that some 1950s atomic style can err on the side of tacky, but achieving a retro look can actually be quite simple. Understated even.

I think this image from Country Living is a great example of how even something as overtly "midcentury" as this table cloth can be easily integrated into non-retro decor. I love how the bright graphic print of this spread adds a fun contrast to the classic sage wainscoting in this little vignette. I'd love to serve a little holiday luncheon for my girlfriends at this table!

Midweek MidCentury: Guess Who's Coming to Thanksgiving Dinner

I think this collage by Angelica Paez has got it right: why eat the turkeys for dinner when you can just hang out with them?

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, ladies! I'm so thankful for all of you reading this blog...I so appreciate your sweet comments, as it's nice to know someone else is interested in the same silly things that I am. I will be back on Friday with more inanity for your enjoyment! 'Til then I wish you much love and pumpkin pie!!! xoxoxo

Midweek MidCentury: Divided Bedrooms

I have been obsessed with this bedroom since it was posted on Retro Renovation several weeks ago. Part of it is the unusual color scheme and accent walls (I'm a sucker for an accent wall), along with that basket of knitting in the foreground of the photo (even the yarn matches the decor!). But more it's the clever use of space created by that faux wall. I mean, who wouldn't love to have a mini-bar/dressing area hidden behind their bed?

Here's a great modern bedroom with the same idea. I love the bookshelves and that graphic wallpaper. No mini-bar, though. That's too bad....

Midweek MidCentury: Danish Modern Vignette

What's not to love about a Danish modern credenza topped with Jonathan Adler figurines and Japanese lanterns? So simple. So clean. So pretty.

Midweek MidCentury: Cornucopia Vases

I feel like Thanksgiving decorations are often overlooked in the excitement to jump straight from Halloween to Christmas. You rarely see really nice, harvest-y decorations any where, so if you want to pay homage to this lovely holiday, you have to get creative.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing some ideas for Thanksgiving decor, starting today by devoting this week's "Midweek MidCentury" post to a classic midcentury pottery theme: the cornucopia.

Here is a brief snapshot of a few of my favorites that are currently available on Ebay:

Vintage Midcentury Green Art Pottery Cornucopia Vase

One of these vases on its own would make a fantastic Thanksgiving centerpiece, but I think a whole grouping of them, surrounded by small squashes, candles and leaves on a mantle or sideboard, would make an incredible statement.

Darn--I think I just talked myself into a new collection!

Retirement Home

My best friend and I have a little game we like to play wherein we envision our older, widowed selves living a life filled with dirty martinis; caftans; turbans (for me, anyway); glorious meals; fabulous, gaudy jewels; and a really, really hot pool boy. I’m pretty sure this home is where it will all take place.
